Sania Mirza’s recent decision of not playing in her country,India,to avoid controversies,is shocking and she seems to blow the issue out of proportion. This is a decision she took impulsively and must reconsider.
Mirza had been earlier criticized for wearing short skirts while competing and was also recently in news for showing disrespect to the Indian flag when she was photographed with her feet up near it.
Sania says she is tired of being dragged into numerous controversies and quitting to play on her home-soil is the best way of avoiding further trouble. She has even threatened to shift her training base out of India.
But by doing all this, she is depriving an entire nation from cheering their hero in action. It is understandable that the continuous criticisms have embarrassed and disappointed her immensely.Still..how can she blame the entire nation for only a few people’s comments? She must remember that the fame and the iconic stature she has today is because of the unflinching support and unconditional love she has always received from her fans back in India.
Sania must also realize that celebrities are always mired in controversies. They are a part and parcel of every celebrity’s life. But one has to rise above all this.As India’s star doubles player,Leander Paes ,rightly commented,”nobody is bigger than the game”,she must concentrate only on her game and let everything else just pass by.Nothing can match the pride and joy one has,in playing in one’s own country.
So,was this a spur-of-the-moment decision? Is she really serious about it?Why doesn’t she simply provide her own explanation and bring the issue to an end?Is she being guided in the wrong direction by some people, who are taking advantage of her dependence on them.
If it is so,then it is indeed,a sad day for India,a nation who doesn’t have any other female tennis player inside the top 100 rankings and where fans wait with bated breath to watch their home-grown hero in action.
After all,all that people want to see is good tennis from Sania Mirza’s racket…..nothing else matters…...
